What Cause People To Gain Weight?
 

Lack of physical activities and unhealthy diet may be the main reasons why people tend to gain weight. There are, however, other causes that can cause one to put on weight. Overweight and obesity are believed to be risk factors for many chronic diseases including diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, and stroke. Knowing the causes of weight gain and finding ways to manage weight can prevent heart disease and other diseases.

Over the years, scientists have gathered plenty of evidences linking weight gain to lack of sleep. A recent study conducted by researchers from the University of California, Berkeley found that young adults who slept late during the workweek was associated with an increase in body mass index (BMI) over time. And unfortunately, the BMI increase cannot be mitigated even by exercise or total sleep time. The findings appeared in journal ‘Sleep’.

People who stay up late tend to indulge in late-night snacking. Hormone changes because of insufficient sleep can make one hungrier and feel less full after eating. A paper published in ‘International Journal of Obesity’ reported that people diagnosed with night eating syndrome: those who consume half or more of their daily calories after 7pm; have sleep difficulty 3 or more nights a week; and have no appetite for breakfast; tend to have a higher BMI.

Stress can be another reason why one gains weight. Cortisol (stress hormone) will rise in the person who is stressed. This might increase the appetite. Most people experiencing chronic stress would desire comfort foods, which are mainly sugary and fatty foods. Consuming too much of these foods would certainly cause weight gain.

Furthermore, elevated levels of cortisol in the body can cause a disorder known as Cushing's Syndrome. People with Cushing's Syndrome can gain weight and might have fat accumulates in the face, neck, abdomen and upper back. Other symptoms may include muscle wasting and weakness, thin skin, poor wound healing, easy bruising, menstrual irregularities, high blood pressure, glucose intolerance and hair loss in women.

Hypothyroidism may slow the metabolism of food resulting in loss of appetite and modest weight gain. Weight gain may be from fat accumulation and fluid retention caused by protein deposits in the body. Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough of certain important hormones. Over time, untreated hypothyroidism can also cause a few health problems including obesity, joint pain, infertility and heart disease.

Medications like oral contraceptives containing estrogen and hormone replacement therapy can cause fluid retention and increased appetite. Other medications that can cause weight gain include steroids, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), antidepressants, and diabetic medications.

Avoid overeating by not eating too fast is important in managing weight. That is because it takes time for the brain to recognize that one is full and signal the body to stop eating. But eating too little or skipping meals can slow the metabolism and cause the body to store energy that can result in weight gain. Skipping meals may also mean eating more at the next meal because of hunger.

Blood sugar imbalance can be caused by eating simple and refined carbohydrates. Eating sugary foods can raise the amount of sugar in the blood. Insulin is released causing sugar to be stored away and blood sugar level to be lower. To stabilize blood sugar balance, one may crave for more sugary foods, which are sources of weight gain.

Deficiency in magnesium, iron or Vitamin-D can compromise the immune system, bring down the energy levels or alter the metabolism that can refrain one from taking healthy-lifestyle steps. Those affected may compensate for low energy with caffeine, sweets or simple carbohydrates that are bad for weight management.

Not all calories are equal when it comes to weight. For instance, eating lean protein will cause the body to burn calories more efficiently while carbohydrates are the ones the body tends to burn more slowly and even store in the body more readily. Choosing low-fat proteins and cutting carbohydrates are good ways to help avoid putting on weight. Moreover, getting enough physical exercises are equally important in weight management.
