Would Sex Benefit Older Folks? One of the most creditable studies correlating overall health with sexual frequency revealed that men who reported the highest frequency of orgasm enjoyed a death rate half that of the laggards. The results, which was published in 1997 in the ‘British Medical Journal’, were arrived after researchers from Queens University in Belfast, Northern Ireland tracked the mortality of about 1,000 middle-aged men over a period of 10 years. Several other studies had already shown that having sex even a few times a week has an associative or causal relationship would tend to have some benefits. For instance, a 2001 follow-up to the Queens University study mentioned above, researchers found that by having sex 3 or more times a week, men reduced their risk of heart attack or stroke by half. Other studies also indicated that frequent sex can achieve weight loss and overall fitness, and pain relief, reduce depression, and even have less cold and flu. But a recent study by researchers from Michigan State University and University of Chicago had reported quite different results: “while regular orgasmic sex could actually protect ageing women from certain health problems, frequent and satisfying sexual activity actually poses cardiovascular risks for older men.” The paper was published online on September 6, 2016 in the ‘Journal Of Health And Social Behavior’. The study involved 2,204 people aged between 47 and 85 for the federally funded project. Survey data on sexual behaviors was first collected between 2005 and 2006, and then 5 years later. Cardiovascular risk such as hypertension, rapid heart rate, elevated C-reactive protein and cardiovascular events including heart attack, heart failure and stroke were measured in the study.
Having analyzed the data collected, the researchers found that female participants who indicated sex to be extremely pleasurable or satisfying were less likely to develop hypertension than those who found less gratification in sex. The researchers also added that the female sex hormone released during orgasm could also benefit women's health. On the other hand, men who had sex once or more a week were at a higher risk of cardiovascular events that is almost 2 times greater than older men who are sexually inactive. Moreover, older men who found sex with their partner extremely pleasurable or satisfying had higher risk of cardiovascular events than men who did not feel so. It is possible that older men were usually more difficult to achieve orgasm for medical or emotional reasons and so they might exert themselves to a greater degree of exhaustion and create more stress on their cardiovascular system in order to achieve climax, according to researchers. Medications or supplements used by older men to improve sexual function could also have a negative effect on their cardiovascular health. Meanwhile, having quite a high frequency of sex may indicate problems of sexual addiction, sexual compulsivity or sexual impulsivity, related to psychological states like anxiety or depression that could lead to negative cardiovascular health. While the study reported that great sex is risky for men, those who had sex 1 to 3 times a month and rated it less pleasurable had no increased risk for heart concerns. The researchers concluded that moderate frequent sex can be good for older men, though high frequency of sex is risky for older men. For older women, good sexual quality is good for them. Nevertheless, the researchers admitted that their study could not prove a cause and effect relationship between the participants’ sex lives and their heart health. As such, future studies are necessary to better understand the links and identify how sexuality may affect heart health. It is important for older people to be aware of the risks and benefits of sex. Those with or at risk for heart disease should not be shy to talk about it to their physician about their sex life, implications for heart health, and any concerns.
